Referred
to as the pinnacle of Doric architecture, the Parthenon was completed
in 432 B.C. In the center of the stage is a reproduction of the statue
of Athena, the guardian goddess of Athens, that was enshrined inside the
Parthenon. This is a perfect combination of mathematical design and aesthetic
decoration, and was designed by a great number of engineers. With sculptures
of several gods situated in the gabled triangle below the gable roof,
this has been referred to as a masterpiece among Greek sculptures. These
sculptures are currently owned by the British Museum. The medium-sized statues to the east side of HBC Athens Square are replicas of Athena & Phevos, the mascots for the Athens Olympic Games. Please be sure to take a commemorative photograph with them. "Discus Thrower," a sculpture symbolizing the Olympic Games, has been reproduced to the north side of the stage. |
